From
the Black Swan Mill just five minutes drive brings you to the heart of Bayeux,
an attractive town steeped in history and famous for its tapestry, Cathedral
and lace making. A walk around the town centre and along the banks
of the river Aure that traverses Bayeux is well worthwhile. Sights include
timber frame houses and cobble streets in the old quarter, the Cathedral spires
illuminated at night as well as two working mill wheels. Each year during
the first weekend of July the town holds a medieval market with costumed processions
around the Liberty Tree, stilt walkers, jugglers, fire-eaters and musicians.
Also of interest is the Battle of Normandy Museum and a browse through the
colourful Saturday morning market.
15
minute's drive from Bayeux brings you to the long stretches of golden sands
at Omaha Beach. Arromanches (12 Km away) is famous for the Mulberry Harbour
but a visit to the 360% cinema here is also worthwhile. There are cliff walks
at Longues-Sur-Mer and a quiet pebble cove below the German Battery Guns.
Every Sunday morning at Port-En-Bessin (7 km away) there is a lively quayside
market where you'll find a varied selection of local produce, cheeses and
fresh seafood. Shopping at this picturesque port is a great way to start your
holiday.
